Today, the 20th of March 2013, is the first ever International Day of Happiness to “better capture the importance of the pursuit of happiness and well-being in development…”  Inviting all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations, as well as civil society, including non-governmental organizations and individuals, to observe the International Day of Happiness in an appropriate manner, including through education and public awareness-raising activities.

The United Nations declared  in its resolution 66/281 on the 12th of July 2012 that the 20th of March would be International Happiness Day, declaring that: “the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal”.

Here at the Lodge of Happiness, we share the UN’s vision and strive to pursue happiness in all things, both as Freemasons, our own lives and in the wider community. Today the phrase: “When you smile, the whole world smiles with you,” will ring true more than ever before. Giving everybody a song in their heart, a spring in their step, a smile on their face – Happiness – is the greatest gift we have to give!

Embedded above is a video of “When You’re Smiling” a cover of the song written by Joe Shay, Larry Fisher and Mark Goodwin, made famous by Louis Armstrong. The song has been covered many times since then, resonating through the decades, embedding the phrase into popular culture.

Happy International Happiness Day,
